Hi guys,

I am not exactly working on a Explorer, but it's going to use parts from one.

Any help would be appreciated.

This vehicle will use the Explorer Coil packs and the 5.0L Engine Harness/PCM setup from a 1999:).

Basically this setup is going into a new JMS built Real Street race car that I am working on for the 2006 NMRA season.

My problem/question is this:

Are there any performance plug wires available for the coil pack 5.0L engine setup?

I have seen that Nology has a set of Hot Wires listed for up to 1999......I've never tried this type of wire and would hate to do it without some feedback.

Any advice would be helpful.

The class requires shorty headers and the heads are going to be TFS so my thought is that most likely any performance plug wire should fit if they fit the stock vehicle....also relocation of either coil pack is not a issue if that is the case.

One other thing......I am looking for a few Explorer parts to complete the build along with some spares for the race season (you would be surprised how badly equipment gets beat up).

If anyone has access to the following parts and would like to part with them please drop me a email at: cwj@sctflash.com

5.0L PCM (1 or 2 for Spare 1998-2000)
5.0L Engine Harness (same years for spare)
5.0L Front Timing Cover (with the crank trigger port I still need to buy this)
5.0L Crank Sensor Ring (still need to buy)
5.0L Cam Sensor/Assy (for spare)

Thanks,

Chris Johnson

I had Nology Hotwires on my Toytota MR2 Turbo, I thought they made a differance but then again I had so many after market mods on it who knows. I do not recommend them for the 5.0 though because each plug wire has to be grounded, they have an extra ground cable that needs to be screwed into a grounded bolt or screw. Thats a lot of ground area's for an 8cyl.

I would check out MSD Plug Wires, Jacobs and Magnacore.

Nology's are overrated marketing junk. Don't mess with them.

Search the web a bit and find a set of MSD super conductor wires- less than 50ohms a foot and they are half the price of nology. If you aren't able to come up with anything then I'd go for a factory set of Ford wires, they are top notch and last a long time... hell I still have the OE wires on my 99 Ex and they test out great.

Sounds like a fun project :)

the 96-01 5.0L in the Explorer are really all the same.

Here is what I know:
96-97.5 GT-40 (no p heads)
97.5+ GT-40p
98+ = PCM is equipped with PATS, so you will need PATs module or a re-flash to eliminate PATs or PCM will not work.
96 and 97 use a analog DTRS (Digital Transmission Range Sensor)
98+ use a digital DTRS (go figure)

All Explorer 5.0L PCM's also control the 4r70w transmission.

So you can use a 96-97 PCM to control your 99 5.0L as far as I KNOW. There may be other slight differences in engine sensors. Not sure if anyone has tried this yet.
