"best" type of tow hooks?

For pulling from a hitch, there is an extremely cheap and easy solution. Use you hitch pin. Put the tow strap (assuming it has loops) in the your receiver. Slide the hitch pin through the hole on one side of the receiver, through the loop in the tow strap, then through the hole on the the other side. Put the clip on and you're ready to go. Works like a charm.

yes this works some of the time...but if you have a heavier duity strap the the loops will be reinforced alot more and will not be able to bend enough to slid into the 2x2 reciever....just a warning..this happned to me at the badlands trying to pull Arnie897 out, the strap that was on his bumper was reinforced at the loops and would not fit into my reciever.

Actually, the exact situation you speak of happened to me today. Got stuck and we chose to use my buddy's heavier duty strap with reinforced loops and it slipped right into my receiver. I guess the one you used must have been one fat strap.
 












Honestly, I wouldn't waste any money on accessories for a hitch. There's plenty of options as far as pulling. Put one loop on your hitch ball. Put one end through the hitch and thread the strap through itself. Use the hitch pin. Go buy an inexpensive, short tow strap/rope with hooks on the end so you don't have to thread the strap through itself. Or just wrap the strap around your frame.
 






strap on the ball is a bad idea it could esily fall off, also the metal hooks are a HUGE nono if they come loose from a truck they can do serous damage or even kill...
 






I've been pulled/have seen people pulled from a ball 1000 times and that never happened. Not saying it couldn't though. Also, I think the chances of the hooks coming off and causing are very slim. I don't think they would sell nearly as many of them if they were prone to do that. Have also had experience with straps with hooks and they worked flawlessly. But again, not syaing it couldn't happen.

Yeah, I remember there being a link on this site to an article about a guy getting killed from this happening.
 












I know it could happen, I'm just saying it would be pretty rare. I don't use a strap with hooks, partially for that reason.

taht was a metla clevis linking two starps, but the same idea...metal with alot of force comming at you is never good :thumbdwn:

I am not a big fan of the tow straps with attached metal hooks. I would however use a heavy duty cleavis (10T+) to make the connection with a closed loop hitch.

true but if you go that far, you might as well buy the warn clevis that bolts into your reciever like arnie897 posted...they work verg good

That is true. I have 3 of them :D and a 40,000lb strap...
 






I'm going to go by Napa today and see what they have...
Usually, they ask what kind of vehicle you have...but in this case, I should say, "doesn't matter". If I say, "94 Explorer", they'll say, "we don't have any tow hooks"; if I say, "94 Wrangler" they will say, "oh, here's the part list". :rolleyes:
