someone mentioned baer making bigger rotors for awds, and some have adapted older mustang cobra 13 inch brakes, and troll did a custom brembo brake job. art makes rotors i believe, no clue how much bigger.

Check out this thread, there is guite a bit of onfo.

there is nothing out there other than the $6000 troll/Brembo one off custom upgrade. PUR PONY is working on the Cobra swap, but no one has done it before. if it works, it will only work on AWD/4WD, and it will at least require custom made caliper brackets.

thats what i was looking for....someone or some company that makes a bracket for bigger callipers and a rotor that will fit....thanks for all the info....i dont mind making a bracket but i didnt know if a mustang rotor/ caliper would fit or maybe some other rotor/caliper would fit or whatnot...just looking for a way to put bigger brakes on this pain-in-the-a*s-truck....the stock brakes seem to ...well...suck really bad....so thanks all for the help....

if its any help, i replace all 4 brakes with the Powerslot rotors and Performance Friction pads. made a very noticable difference, but its still no substitute for dinner plate sized rotors and monster calipers. if the Cobra swap would be a 100% improvement, then what i did was a 30% improvement.

jamest, im glad you replied on the power slot rotors b/c i was thinking about that but if its not all that much better than the stock brakes then ill go ahead and throw away some more money and get some big brakes assuming they are possible to get or make....hell im still looking for headers for this thing so i might be going over my head by trying to get ig brakes that arnt made...lol....thanks for the help....

I contacted Bill at BAER brakes last week to find out info on the EXPLORER brake kits.... he said that they dont have one... i though i remember seeing it listed somewhere, but I guess its just like everything else.... they list stuff for our trucks but they really dont make it.
I am still going to try the cobra brake convertion but have not had time yet. I am going to pull the brakes off my mustang and see if the offset is the correct offset like i have heard..... then i will have to machine custom brakets.

when i started this thread i really didnt think anyone made brakes for these trucks but i thought i would ask anyways, so thanks for all the info....also i havent even looked at my "x"s brakes so i dont know how difficult it would be to machine a bracket for the mustang/ cobra calipers and rotors....but if thats what we are all going to have to do then i guess i could get ff my a*s and take a look at em....so anyways if its not too difficult to make a braket for the calipers then i will consider making them for all who want them....on the other hand if they are an absolute nightmare to make, then your all on your own....also if anyone has already made one would YOU mind making them for all who want them or maybe sending me a proto type for me to use as a possible template....thanks for all the help....

I spoke to Bill Koppinger at Baer Claw and was told the following 09/02.

99' Explorer
Pro 13" 1 pc rotor
4 piston caliper $2695

Pro+ 13.5" 2 pc rotor
4 piston caliper $3065
can be upgraded to 14"

He made those offers to be back in Sept. I'm not sure if they still want to do it but you could check.

On a side note. What mods do you have to get those Hp/Tq #'s? Are they flywheel or rearwheel? Dyno or track? NoS?

My truck is up in hudson getting a new piston and I'll be picking it up next week. Email me, I'd like to check out your ride. Dom

like stated above- I spoke to Bill Koppinger at Baer the other day and he said they had nothing for explorers!!!! what the heck... anyways... You should be able to put a brake package together for less then half that. We will see cause i am working on it.

You can't get there from here....

John V at EE was working on a kit that used the older corvette calipers and rotors, but it got scrapped too ( and was AWD only).

Give up and buy powerslot.

do you know what year corvette calipers?? cause the new vette calipers are the same as the cobra ... they are interchangable I have been told and are the dual piston PBR's

Sorry, I don't remember: Call Dave Vanek at Explorer Express tomorrow - he's the one who told me originally.

anyone ever think about just throwing their X in the trash? i sometimes just wanna wad mine up and leave it in a dumpster somewhere... right now there is a company out there building a big brake kit for a Mini Cooper.

lol - I keep wanting to ditch my X also for a new F250 Turbo diesel.... but for some strange reason my X keeps calling me back. I never know what to do!!!!

i agree with all of yall.....i wanna throw this thing in the garbage but for some reason i havent yet....i think i have invested about $40,000 in this thing (includeing) $29,000 for the truck new) and ill never get even close to that for it so maybe thats why i still have it...but i still have hope to see this thing be what I think it could be....but anyways thanks for all the help with my questions and im gunna keep going with this and try mustang/cora rake and make a braket to mount the calipers and IF it works like some ay it will then we will all have big brakes for a hell of a lot less than $3,000....
and dom....all me at 813-376-4860 when you come up here to pic up your truck and we'll talk "x" s ....to everyone else im gunna go get a set of brakes off of a cobra and let eveyone know where or not its possible and what it cost....thanks again for the help....

"If it isn't easy, it isn't cool" - Jesse James on Monster Garage.

C'mon guys - we love these explorers because you can't just call up JC-s#$tney and order Big brakes. It takes hard work, time and creativity to make these things as hot as they are. And to me, that's the fun part!!

Now...
1) Do the powerslot rotors also have the rear drums? Or are those retained stock?
2)Where is the best place to purchase powerslots?
3) What pads to people run?
4) If the stock rotors are fine, is it worth upgrading them, or just getting perfromance pads?
