Hello,

I got the bad news my timing chain has jumped on my 99 SOHC explorer. One shop wants about $1,500 to repair that and says the tranny needs replaced to. Another shop says better off just replacing the whole motor for $3,000 and then dealing with the tranny. I still owe $8,700 on the Ex and the lot isn't willing to help one bit. I am so screwed.

There are many threads on replacing the timing chains/dealing with the aftermath of broken timing chains. It may be cheapest for you to buy a low mileage used engine, make sure it has the revised tensioners, etc. (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227038) and swap it for your existing engine. There's a ton of info here on replacing the engine, and recommendations for which years had more reliable engines. You could attempt a repair of the existing engine, but there may be hidden problems also like damaged pistons or valves.

Because the repairs are so labor intensive, you can save a ton of money doing the work yourself.
