bigger tires affecting anti-lock brakes?

I have a 96 Explorer Sport and have been looking to switch out the factory tires(P235) for some BFG 30x10.50 All-Terrain tires, but every tire dealer I went to won't put them on because they say the anti-lock breaks won't work. I see so many SUV's with bigger tires and was wondering if the bigger tires will greatly affect my anti-lock brakes or not?

They are full of sh*t. I have a 93 EB with the 4-wheel anti-lock, and 33's. Not one bit of problem. As long as your gearing stays close to stock, it will not affect it at all. 30's are not big enough to have to worry about gearing at all....... so you will be fine. It is real fun to activate the anti-lock with the big tires. You can hear it pulsing on the various tires with an audible chirp....... is actually kinda cool. People look at you like you are nuts. Hi GAC,
Gloria's right about that. I run 31X10.5 BFG A/T's on my 97 and don't have any problems. I also ran the same size tires on my 95 without any problems. The tire stores will tell you that because their book says 29's are the biggest. That is B.S. Find a good tire store and they will put them on the fronts for you to check out.

The above two posts are dead on. ABS works on the principle of wheel movement rather than tire diameter. Of course, the larger the tires, the harder the brake must work. However, ABS has nothing to do with tire diameter. It is based on rotor/wheel movement in the front and ring gear movement in the rear.
Hope this helps, take care and happy exploring!
