I have a '95 explorer 4dr and its just getting tired. I thought about finding the biggest engine I could get my hands on and squezing it in...what is the biggest engine that will fit in an explorer? Also, I know it is possible to go too big, so what would be the best engine to drop in it? Right now it has the 6 cyl. 4.0.

Best swap would be a 96-97 5.0L V8 from an explorer.

I just saw a wrecked S/C 5.4 Lightning at the auction. Now that would :bounce: I read somewhere that a modular was stuffed in a ranger/explorer. But don't listen to me, I'm having enough problem fitting a 5.0 in mine.

dollar for dollar a 302 or a 347 is your best bet....its possible to get 400hp easily and reliably out of one so if your gunna do a swap that would be my suggestion....im pushin about 350hp now and its a little too much for the wife sometimes....but its a whole lot of fun....good luck...

How fast are your explorers? I'm not at all familiar with how fast an explorer would be with a 347.

A 347 might be a little too much for the wife sometimes :) Look for Troll's posts.

Well, it started out like this: I keep seeing these bad@ss cars on the internet and at the track. So I came up with the idea that I was going to find the biggest engine I could find and slap a blower on it, then cram it in any car I could find for cheap.:D Well, of course that would be was too expensive, so I now want to cram a big engine in the explorer. I want it too haul:eek: . Now, you know that there is no such thing as too fast for me:D . So what do you suggest for the explorer that will fulfill what I said above without costing way too much. Also, even though this is an SUV, what are some quarter mile times of explorers with v8s?

Stock 5.0 from an Explorer = Slow. It won't run much faster than my SOHC. Should be low 16s in the 1/4.

Now when the mods start...well, my SOHC gets toasted big time. Troll's Explorer with a blown 347 runs in the 11s in the 1/4 mile

I have the 4.0L v6 with auto trans. What other engines will this trans bolt up to?

The Explorer tranny's are junk, they can barely handle the 4.0 V-6. If your are going to put a new motor in your Ex, definatly put a stronger tranny in as well.

If you really wanna keep your tranny a newer 4.0 SOHC engine out of a newer Explorer is about your only other option.

isnt the tranny for the OHV a 4 speed, while the SOHC is a 5 speed?

It's my understanding that 98+ even OHVs came with the 5R55E if they had an automatic.

interesting.. thanks alec.. never knew that

My 97 Sport has the 5R55E. I'm pretty sure that both the OHV and SOHC have the 5 speed auto starting in 97.

But remember, the V-8 has a 4R70W which is VERY reliable. Only the V-6s get shafted with the bad bad tranny.
