black box hanging on rearview mirror?

Here is my first post as a new 2003 Explorer owner - I thought I would start out with a dumb question - What is the little black box that hangs off the interior reaview mirror mount that is plugged into the back of the mirror? I searched the forum, looked through the owners manual and my Haynes manual and I can't find any info. Thanks -Al

It's the compass. It has a button on the top for calibration in conjunction with the Message Center buttons.
