HELLO PEOPLE , WELL I HAVE A SMALL PROB. ! MY TRANNY IS NOT SHIFTING PROPERLY , THERE IS A HUGE DELAY BETWEEN 1 AND 2 GEARS , MY V. MODULATOR WAS REPLACED ONE YEAR BACK(LOW ATTITUDE TYPE , SINCE I COULD NOT GET THE HIGH ATTITUDE V.MODULATOR WHICH IS MORE EXPENSIVE AND NOT AVAILABLE) AND SINCE THEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON (173 CODE ) , I HAVE REPLACED THE OIL AND FILTER ONE MONTH BACK , THE OIL IS HEAVY AND BLACK NOW AND WITH A BURNED SMELL ,,,,
SO COULD THIS BE DUE TO A LEAKING V.MODULATOR HOSE , BECAUSE I FEEL THE HOSE IS LITTLE LOSE WHERE IT FITS THE MODULATOR , OR MAY BE THE COOLER WHICH I NEVER CLEANED , OR I NEED A rebuild? ,,,please say no !!! :)

thank you

The transmission is dependent upon hydraulic pressure, so having clean fluid, and a clean filter are very important. This is the definition of the code from # 17 in my list of useful threads:
173
(R,M)
Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was rich - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control.

thanks for the reply , please what are the symptoms of a bad transmission , i mean when is the time to 100 % know that the tranny needs rebuild? what i have described is a sign of bad transmission ? and when to know that it is time to rebuild a transmission and when to try to look for repair ?

thank you , I'm waiting for your reply

Dr.Gandhi

A wet air test plate on a valve body, an air test plate on the under side of the transmission, and a 0-300 PSI hydraulic test gauge will help determine if the transmission needs to be rebuilt. For the average DIY home mechanic, first replace the fluid, and filter. The next step would be a valve body rebuild. If any of these things don't work, then you would have to perform an entire rebuild. Most shops don't take the time to troubleshoot problems. They often jump on rebuilding everything, especially if the vehicle has high mileage.

Holy caps lock I can't even read that without getting distracted by the caps lock

lol , ;) , sorry my friend for the caps lock , i promise next time i will never use caps. lock ! thanks alot for the reply , i'm going to change the filter and oil , and i will do cleaning for the cooler too ,i will keep you updated about it ,,, thanks alot guys !

i have a question , how many ltrs. exactly of oil do my tranny take , when it is dry empty of oil ? 92 model 4x4 ,,, and there are 2 hoses going to the tranny little cooler , which of them is out line and which is in line ?

I'm not sure in liters, but if you drop the pan to replace the filter, then the 4WD pan takes 3 quarts. Allow a little more for fluid which drains out of the transmission. The upper line on the transmission is the return line. The bottom line is the pressure line. Check # 52 in my list of useful threads for more information.

sir , meant the tranny cooler , the small one , i was talking about the lines going into that small cooler , by the way what is the use of this cooler and where these lines are coming from ? http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp56/DRGANDHII/cooooler.jpg, and when draining the fluid from those lines , all the tranny fluid should come out , is it right ?
about the radiator lines which comes from the tranny , is their function same like cooler lines ?

help is needed !

hi b.bay , yesterday i changed the fluid from the cooler line , the fluid was very black and with a burnt smell , it took around 11 qrts. today i checked the level , its little high and it was not as it should be , i mean the color was brownish and the smell is not like that for the new oil ,,, one more thing , when putting the first gear or the reverse ,, it will not move , until i press the pedal to 1500-1800 rpm !! so ,,, mmm , please help me just to find the correct diagnosis for the prob.
is it time for rebuilding the tranny?
is the oil quality I'm using is bad ?
is the prob. is engine related ?
what to do next ?

thanks
Dr.Gandhi

so, what to do ? rebuild ? wait may be some air is trapped inside the t.c ? this prob. raised when i changed the oil ,, before there was delay shifting bw. gears , now the first gear is not engaging with a more softer shifting gears , what is that? and there was no fragments , only heavy black fluid ,,

I would say with the description you have provided something has come apart in the trans or have a major internal fluid leak causing the transmission to slip. Sounds to me it is time for a rebuild. How many miles are on the transmission by the way?

Eric

thanks for the reply , it is around 240,000 kms, may be 170,000 miles on the car , but i got this car as a second hand car , and the old owner claims that everything was original from the factory , and i believed him because it was really v.good , engine , transmission ,,,,, everything ,

new discovery today , when the AC is off , much more better performance , and slippage is less today , and when cold there is a gap bw. 1st and 2nd , actually big gap or may be is not shifting at all till you drive for about 10 mnts or so , then much smaller gap and smoother shift,,, by the way some one was telling me it could be the IAC , since i did cleaning of it the same day of tranny fluid change and since then the prob. raised,,
today i will read the check engine code and it seems related to the prob. of the transmission ,,,, i will keep you updated friends ,,,

thanx alot guys ,,

codes extracted ,,,,

here are the codes i got today ,,, i need your help friends to explain to me what to replace and what to clean ,,,

172 (R,M) Oxygen sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right
or Rear HO2S - Fuel control

213 (R) Ignition SPOUT or SAW circuit open or shorted - Ignition Systems

412 (R) Idle speed system not controlling idle properly (generally idle too low) - ISC

536 (O,R,M) Brake On Off open or shorted to ground - BOO

538 (R) System did not receive "goose" test - TESTS

now ,,,

i still have prob.
in the morning when car is cold , no prob. engaging first and reverse , when car is hot later in the day , no engagement till too high rpm and with some jerky shakes and some noise from under the car ,,,

when cold , delay in 1st-2nd gear shift ,,,, when hot ,, no delay , with a smoother shifting 1-2 , 2-3 , 3-4 ,,, but no first gear or reverse till high rpm ,,

???
what can this be ?

thank you

hi Brooklyn, thanx for the reply ,

filter and oil were changed one month back , when checking the oil few days later it was brown , i thought i will change the oil completely thru the radiator lines ,, then i did that few days later , when done , the tranny started giving these problems, not engaging first gear when hot till higher rpm with a noise and shakes , when going in higher gears no prob. at all , just engagement when hot , on the traffic signal you have to put the gear in D, and press on the pedal till it reaches 2000 rpm then it starts moving slowwwwly and gives a little shakes and a grinding noise from the tranny ,,

thanx in advance ,
your reply means a lot to me :) :) :)

Other than replace the filter, and fluid, did you try any of the previously suggested things such as test the hydraulic pressure with a 0 -300 PSI gauge, rebuild the valve body, replace the valve body gaskets, check the torque of the valve body bolts, or perform a torque converter stall speed test?
