does the exhaust smell normal

Did you remove the resonator?

should be just past the muffler before the rear axle sloping up (on the 2 door sport)

then i would say it has been removed

Are you saying that both the 40 series and the magnaflow when on your exhaust are just as quiet as when you run the stock muffler and you want it louder?

Also, are you comparing it when your in the vehicle with the windows up or down? Or are you doing it from outside the truck?

We have a 40 series and I can definatly tell its there. it drones slightly at 3000 rpms.

Did you by any chance take video of the different setups so we can see/hear the differences?

yes they are quiet like stock. ive done a few different things, windows up, windows down, wife pressing gas with me out to listen and while i was under the car, all the same. doesnt matter if im in town cruisn at 35 mph or stompn it on the high way at 65 mph. Had my friend follow in his car to see if he could hear it while in town and on highway. yeah i wanted it loudish... that is why i got the 40 series.

no video sorry.

neighbor said clogged cats will cause the muffler to be quiet is that true?

clogged cats would make the exhaust sound quieter but u would notice other things first, ie bad performance. the resonator just adds a little to the sound, its not a big difference, see if ur muffler shop offers a echo chamber or such if u are looking for a big truck sound :)

well i hears a 40 series on an explorer close to me who is from the forum, mine is no where nears his... i wasnt going for the LOUD nor silent night but Im here and noticeble.. i mean sh** its jacked up etc it should sound like what it looks like lol

ask him if hed mind u taken a look at his maby? see if he still has the resonator, it adds just a bit of "base" to the sound..

Here is our '92 with a flowmaster 40 and a highflow cat. The Cat has been moved back to near the transfer case.

Thats 2.5" pipe from the collector to the Cat and 2.25" pipe from the Cat all the way back (both sides of the flowmaster). Also, there is no resonator on it.

I tried to get the sound from different places with different conditions (without actually driving)..

It definitely louder than it was stock...

If you follow your exhaust you will have the Cat then a muffler, and then farther down the resonator, if you have it.

IIRC, its in/by that hump in the exhuast as it goes over the axle.

Sounds pretty damn good to me - if you want it louder, why not just straight-pipe it after the cat? i've got a 4.0 ranger which is straight piped after the cats and it actually sounds very similar to you're truck in the video.

edit: nevermind, just saw that wasn't even the op's video haha.
