On my 96, I seem to have a problem with the blend door. It's been stuck on full heat up to a few days ago when it went on no heat. This was interesting at -5F. I cut a hole in the plenum and moved the blend door back to the heat position. It swings easily and I can hear the actuator(?) motor run when I turn the temperature control on the dash. Is this the problem that's been written about in the past? What exactly is broken here? I thought about attaching a manual choke cable to the end of the door and operating in this way for the time being.

When I bought my X the blend door was broken. The dealership fixed it so I'm not sure what exactally is wrong with it. It's been discussed here before. Try a search.

I'm suprised more people haven't responded.

The plastic socket that the actuator turns

cracks. There is a post on ford-trucks.com that tells how to drill and put a pin in the actuator shaft. I wrote "Blend door so you're cold cheap and lazy" on a temporary fix. Search for these.

when i bought my x the blend door had the same fix on it and the it totaly went. had to dish out $597 to be exact and that was a deal. sounds like you have a temporary fix like mine was, but it may go eventually. i hope not, cuz losing out on 6 bills sux. good luck;)

Does this possibly cause a squealing/ whining souind before it goes? I have heard an "animal caught in something" sound come from somewhere in the heating system a few times. It's faint, but definately noticable. The other day I put on the heat and it blew cold air. I turned the heat know back and forth a few times and I got heat. I then switched between heat and max ac 6 or 7 times and it worked like it should. A blend door problem is right up my alley at this point.

Before the heater quit, adjusting the temp control sounded a bit like a faint whoppie cushion. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

yes that is a good description actually. that's how mine sounded also when it went.

On my '96, the blend door gets stuck in heat or a/c. Sometimes when heat is on, I get cold air.........sometimes the opposite. I can usually tell when it flips. Mine isn't as much as a whoppie cushion sound tho..........it is more of a plastic door hitting against a plastic duct type of sound.:D Just a faint, quick clunk.

eventually it's going to stick for good on one side or the other.
