Shortly after passing 30,000 miles the 4x4 high and 4x4 low yellow caution lights started flashing on and off 5 times about every 5 minutes? Has anyone seen this before?

Yep

I had a 96 ranger splash that did it a little after hitting 30 K and my 99 explorer did the same thing. Both times I took it to ford as they were both warrenty items. I am sorry but I do not remember what they replaced but I do know it was a sensor or motor so good luck.

You may have a speed sensor headed south. The # and timing of the flashing lights represents a code, so if you are still under warranty, bring it in and have the code run.

I have a 1997 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC that recently began showing the same flahing 4WD lights at 49K. Prior to the flashing lights my tranny
would "automatically" slip into 4WD even when the selector was in 2WD. I experienced steering binding as well as "downshifting" when driving.

I was informed that the transfer case sensor was malfunctioning and that it would cost $35 in parts and $176 in labor (dealerships...). I was also informed that my transmission fluid was "burned" even though it was flushed & changed @ 30K and that there was a possibility that I would need a new/rebuilt tranny.

YEP..

My 99 did it @ 29800mi, I took it into the dealer, and they said that it was the electronic shift motor on the transfer case, they replaced the motor and the wire harness leading to it. they said that they had seen it before but didn't know the cause but suspected a batch of bad motors???

Before you do any of the above:

Disconnect one of the battery cables from the battery for about 15 minutes, to reset the computer. Then reconnect (of course), and drive the vehicle around the block (1 mile or so at varying speeds).

If the flashing returns, then try some of the things above. I don't think driving while flashing will harm anything--you just won't be able to use the 4WD.

Good luck.

Just replaced mine this weekend. Not to hard just make sure when you move the wires from one harness to the other you make sure you do everything right (everything has numbers next to it)

All you have to do to get the wires out is disconnect the harness and look inside you will see a little red thing. Pull this out, and then pull on the wires they should pull out at this time. Then move then to the other side and make sure they CLICK in. Then install the red thing and you are good to go!

Also keep in mine you will have to pull the skid plate! Makes thins easier, and also the little balancer thingy. Has 2 round black pieces on it they look like donuts.

If you have any questions e-mail me I will help you out!

Peace

Guys it was snowy here today and i put it in 4x4 auto, and it seemed to engage and work fine, but the lights would blink 5 times every few minutes. so i took it out and now its doing it all the time now. What could be wrong? This has been happening for quite some time now. -a few months

You may have a speed sensor that headed south for the winter.

hmm how hard is that and how hard is it to replace

That blinking is a code, if you goto your Ford dealer maybe they will tell you what's up.

Well, it doesnt blink all the time, and once i turned the truck off after 4wd it goes away. The blinking has only come on with my truck in 4wd auto with icy and snowy roads. So im not sure if ford can diagonse something thats not always on. like should i bring it to them flashing or what?

lol, use a rubber mallet on it.
