block heater

I already looked at the posts about block heaters, but had a question. I'm kind of ignorant about the options on my Explorer, I bought a used '02, and it didn't have a block heater listed as an option. (the dealership was pretty dumb too) I of course, never thought about it, until recently, when I noticed a plastic cap in front of the radiator, when opened, has a plug. The only thing I could think, was block heater, but I bought the damn thing in Virginia Beach, and I believe the previous owner also was located in Va Beach. Am I correct in assuming block heater, or should I just plug it in and find out?

bizare ! could take a pic of this ? I`m from Canada where a block heater is a regular option but in your area ??? no use fot that...

When you say, 'has a plug', are you meaning a three prong 110v outlet style plug i.e. houshold? If so then it would be a waterheater, like a block heater. Water heaters will heat up the water, which will give you instand heat in the cab and help heat the engine faster upon startup. A true block heater keep the engine block, oil and water in the block warm. Same idea, two different applications.

Yes, it is like a regular 3 prong plug, 110 V, Your standard plug in to an extension cord end.

Block Heater, water heater, I wasn't aware any of this came standard, and the dealership didn't have anything listed as an option.

then its probably a water heater... jsut make sure you unplug it before you start your truck.... making the truck and the heater heat it is bad!

Follow the cord back to where it comes out of. If it's in the block, it's a block heater (99% sure it is). If it's in the radiator itself, then it's a water heater but most likely a block heater. Wish mine came with one.

The truck was prop intended for sale up north or northwest. Most Fords have that option around here.

Well, Good call, I traced the wire back, and it looks like it connects to the block. Interesting. I guess it should have tipped me off when the top of the plug said made in Canada.

Aside from heating oil and heating water, what's the difference? Why would I want hot water?

hot water=hot heater in the cab. Cold starting is hard on the engine. This will also help warm up the engine to operating temp prior to driving, which is also very hard on the motor.
