Just bought a 1996 very clean explorer with 112k miles

i noticed that the blower motor is very loud on the 2 highest settings, is this how they came stock?

if i was to replace it would it quiet it down?

anybody done this? what would be a good replacement part?

thanks!

Loud how? Loud like screeching bearing going out or loud like a off balance vibration, or it's blowing a lot of air, loud?

not screaching or anything, but yeah it does sound like a very loud vibration, and its only on the higher settings, the airflow seems like its a little less than it would be on the highest setting as well

do you think something could be off balance?

is the blower motor located in the engine bay on these suvs?

Try taking the motor out and check for debris build up in the heater box. I have found sticks, grass, acorns and other things in there that cause the same symptoms you describe. Some of this is trash that gets in through the fresh air vent in front of the windshield and some of it can be from mouse condos.

While you have it out check the fan wheel for damage which can cause vibration. Plug it in while it is removed and have a helper operate it through the various speeds to check its operation.

If you don't find any of the things that radman described when you remove it then it's probably the motor bearings worn too much which means time for a new motor.
