I have an 04 Explorer, I have been noticing the last 4 or 5 days that when I turn my heat up on the high setting I hear a soft clunking noise, but it would still blow heat out. I would never leave it on high because it was annoying. On setting 1-3 it was fine, no noise at all. Well today after work I went out and started my car to allow it to warm up and turned it to the high setting, and still heard the noise, but this time I just left it on high. (bad idea obviously) I returned about 15 minutes later and now it does not blow heat out at all on any setting. Just hear kind of a low whining sound. What happened? I am guessing the blower or blower motor, but i'm not very car savvy so it's merely a guess. Can someone point me in the right direction? I just had to do the whole blend door fix a few weeks ago and now this!!!!! Any help would be great!!!!

sounds like the whining is coming from behind the glove compartment somewhere......

sounds like a blower motor i never looked on my x but its should be right in the fire wall

That's where is should be, the other side of the firewall from the glove box. The blower motor is a direct drive "squirrel cage" desigle. Most have a resistor for the speed settings with a 1-time-use thermal overload switch, if that thermal switch overheats, it opens the circuit but if your hearing humming,

but most likely the motor has gone belly-up.

thanks

How hard of a fix is it to replace the motor? Is it something that requires taking the dash apart or is it reachable with minimal tear down?

you should be able to do it from under the hood open the hood and look on the right side of the fire wall and there will be a black round object that is the bower motor
