Well I'm pretty sure my 91 blew its transmission today but I'd like to know whats wrong before I go diving in trying to fix it. First of all the truck had a going out the door tranny when I bought it two years ago. It's got about 260,000 miles on it. It's a 2wd model with the automatic trans and a tow kit so it has the trans cooler in the front.
The other day the tranny just stopped pulling at all and the engine just reved freely so I tried to nurse it to the nearest gas station and buy some fluid.(it leaks alot so I assumed it was out) When I took out the dipstick to check it smoke came out of the top of the tube so I figured it was toast then. I went in and got some fluid and dumped in it anyways. It ran decently the rest of the way home but it was hestitating to pull after I stopped. Kinda felt like the clutches were trying to engage but having trouble. I'm pretty sure those are toast. The other more complicated problem is the engine is running hot or at least it feels hot. Gauge says it's fine, but i'm not so sure. Could an overheated trans cooler be the heat I am feeling? Could it cause the engine to run hot? Now when I try to dirve it it won't shift out of second gear, and as soon as I let off of the gas it slows down imediatly like a manual rather then coasting as it should. Anyone have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm considering rebuilding this myself. It would be the first rebuild I'd be doing by myself but I have helped a very experienced mechanic rebuild one a few years back. As well as rebuild engines of all sorts. Should I take the plunge and try it myself?

Welcome to this forum! Don't be afraid to take the chance. Read as much as you could about the A4LD before you tear it apart. Every year had something a little different (not to mention every engine it was used with made things even more complicated). The sticky threads in the transmission section of this forum on the A4LD, and Project Frankentranny should provide the information you will need.
