As an auto parts professional and a person who is versed in battery, starting, and charging (taking my ASE test in january) let me offer my opinion on the optima batteries:

Yellow Top - Designed to be completely discharged and recharged multiple times, made to run accessories, such as lights and winches and other accessories. Can be run in parallel with Red Top batteries on vehicles if need be, but recommended to be installed with an isolator.

Red Top - If you only have one battery in your vehicle this should be it. While not designed to be discharged as many times as the yellow tops, they usually are rated stronger and are designed to be the main battery in a vehicle system (takes care of starting duties).

Blue Top - Made for marine use. Has long discharge times and isn't recommended to be run in a vehicle. Basically this battery you completely discharge during use then recharge with a charger.

Cheers!

WHy do I see people run blue tops then?

What's the difference between blue and yellow in physical appearances besides the fact blue has extra posts that are threaded....does yellow have longer posts or what because my stock battery cables doesnt leave much room to attach anything to for accessories.

That's why I was looking at blue because of extra terminal posts

in my experience ive never seen anyone run a blue top in a car or truck, im not sure why anyone would do that. what type of application will you need this battery for? unless you have a booming sound system, winches and aux lights, monitors and any of that stuff, run the red top.

I have a yellow top, it works great.
Like everyone else said, blue is for boats.
I'm quite sure red is optima's up-rated normal person battery, and yellow is for offroading (takes vibration, etc. better).

How do you attach stuff to yellow top battery posts? The ST stock cables won't let you add anything to it?

Can't you just wire whatever you want around the tops?
I've really no idea - I'm not familiar with aftermarket electronic wiring. I just got the battery because I trust the band, it had a good warranty and I wanted the vibration resistance.
Sorry.

..here are a few options..:dunno:
