I have noticed that on my 05 X, the paint on my roof is chipping off pretty bad. I would like to have this taken care of, but dont know how to go about it...

would something like this be covered under warranty, or could this go through an insurance claim ?

If possible i would love to paint my X black :D

Having dated a lady that worked for State Farm for 3 years. Paint chipping from faulty craftsmanship or materials is NOT claim worthy. I would however, look into taking it to the stealership and ask them some good questions about it. I know chevy had this problem REAL bad for a few years and they took care of it to a certain point. I would also do a search of recalls to see if this is one.

Man all that bumpin your doing with those subs must be flinging the paint off your roof. No honestly I havnt heard of this happening to many 3rd gens but I would ask the dealer.

i will go get a pic with my blackberry so you can actually see what the issue is...

Hehe...heard this is common with many SUVs, as people forget/cant be bothered washing/waxing the roof....usually its more severe color fade rather than chipping though...

There is a 5 year warranty on panels, so talk to the dealer about it. While that warranty has run out, if you can prove the condition was there inside that 5 year period, the dealership may be willing to help out. Mine had chipping/bubbling on the front of the hood and I had a vehicle inspection report at time of purchase which was inside the 5 years, so the dealer was willing to pay for the repair even though I went to them outside of the warranty period.

here are 2 pics of my roof... these are the largest chips in the paint...

the first pic, is hard to tell because of the lighting, that is the only spot of rust so far on the roof...

Kind of similar to what has happened to my X. I have a similar issue, but on the bumper of my X. I can't really tell too much, but looks like it may be a clear coat problem. If I am correct there looks to be paint or primer still on there, but the top layer is chipping. The bumper on my 05 X, is chipping the same way and the tan color is still there, it just looks like crap.

Painting your X black would be awesome :D A lot of work and cost, but it'd be sweet!

So I can maybe better help you, is there still paint on your X (where it has chipped), or is it down to the metal or primer. The larger of the 2 chips does have some rust like you mentioned.

Mines been like that for a year now. Dealership said tough luck. Quoted about $400 to repaint.

Sean,

400 for your whole X or just touch up ?

If you plan on going down to bare steel, I would use a epoxy sealer primer... Then it will have the best protection against corrosion, not as good as factory E-coat... but good...
The main thing when repainting is prep.. making sure the area is clean and dust free... Here in class we would do 220,320, prime, block with 500, then clean again, then final coat spray...

I had the exact same thing, Caldwell. So far, i just sanded it down and primered it, but its been too hot or humid to paint, but sometime soon it'll cool down enough for me to get around to it, after school, i'll try to snap a pic of mine and upload it.

At the autopart stores, they now have matching spray paint you can buy(spray cans). See if you can get your color and do some basic prep and blend it in and hit it with clear. Being the roof, no one will notice it;)

Otherwise sell it and buy a BLACK V8!!!!!!

$400 for the whole roof. I think I may do a rattle can touch up after some prep and then paint the whole truck in the spring.

My roof started like yours, now there is almost no paint in any of the channels. A real PITA I tell you. And its spreading. De-lamination is what they call it. Poor prep and paint is what I call it.

Here's a link to the thread I started about mine. (has pics) http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=250971&highlight=peeling+roof+paint

Good thing my X isn't doing this...yet. Has me worried.

Question here:
So you who have the paint chipping on the roof....do you wax your explorer's roof?

the rattle can stuff is pretty good... as long as you throw down a layer of clear on top of it.. my hood is painted with color matched rattlecan paint... looks good from a distance...

Well my 05' has this problem too. I just sanded down all the channels, two coats of rust prof/primer, two coats of touch up paint. The rust was only surface rust thank god, and it came out ok. Noone is going to look up there except me. This is a PITA job, I had no step ladder of any kind. So it was standing on my rear seats, and holding on the roof racks. Just take your time, tape off the area for over spray. Then have at it, its not a hard job too do. Its just a pain because of where its at. I can't believe how thin the paint is up there. It looked like only one coat was applied by ford.

Had the same problem on more than half of my roof. After sanding down rust and priming it I took some rostoleum silver outdoor and applied a few coats. Then clear coated and waxed and it matched pretty well, not that anyone can see it anyway.

My 05 Ltd's roof is peeling in the tracks also. AND the front edge of the hatch is peeling too! This really POs me. Gas guage doesn't work half the time. Tire pressure sensors throw error codes. Check engine light has been on for 2 years. Ball joints bad. Water pump and neck literally blew out a couple of months ago. Noisy brakes. All this with less than 100k on the clock. And now the paint.

Bought a new 2011 Explorer XLT 6 months ago and having more trubs with it. According to the forums I am not alone. I'm a Ford guy but the Explorers don't seem to be very good. On the other hand I've owned three Expeditions and they were pretty much trouble-free.
