While you're on the subject of ezhaust...is it recomended more often to hollow the cat and get a cat-back exhaust system, or full dual exhast (headers)
I prefer Flowmaster mufflers because they are the best bang for the buck. The new Delta series have more power and better sound.
Instead of making your decision based on other's comments, you need to decide what you trully want.
* If you want the best value available, go with flowmaster.
* If you plan on keeping your truck for a long time (not wanting to change the exhaust again), you can spare the extra couple hundred bucks and your car is in good shape, Borla may be the way to good.... B/C it will last longer. This is not to say that the Flowmaster will not last long. I have had mine for two and a half years already.
As far as dual exhaust, you have to realize that unless you are a magician, dual exhaust will be nearly impossible with the spare under the truck. If the spare is removed then you will have more than enough room.
FF/EMT - don't bother gutting out the cat. You are looking for trouble, unless you can find someone too pass the truck's emission test. Instead go with a High-Flow Cat. Pro-Flow makes one for the explorers and its available from Summit Racing.
Hey guys,
I have a Flowmaster Cat-Bac system on my Explorer right now... I've been thru hell and back with that thing... It has a great sound and it was cheap to purchase... But I installed it with a bunch of my buddies and it took us every bit of 3 hours to do...(Note one of the installers is a full time mechanic) After some tourching and minor cutting work we got her installed.... I must say that the hanger for my muffler didn't line up right and we had to majorly jerry rig it go hold it up in place. I had one of the pipes come loose. After all that work I ended up having it installed professionally and welded up tight. Now **knock on wood** it's worry free. It sounds great and yes it was cheap to purchase but I wouldn't go that route again.
I'd get a Flowmaster Seires 40 Race Muffler and have someone else install it. I'd have the speed shop in which you purchase the muffler from install it... Don't go to a discount place... They'll try and sell you all kinds of stuff you don't need. I think with the Flowmaster Seires 40 Race Muffler you'll be happy. It's plenty loud and you'd still get the fuel ecconomy of a Flowmaster II like mine.
Good luck!
Get what you think will work out best and learn from my mistakes. If you get the job done right the first time you won't have to do it again later! Dead Link Removed

what would the loudest muffler be? i have borla hedders and gibson cat-back i am not satified with the sound it sounds good if you put your ear up to the tailpipe. Dead Link Removed but i want a louder sound what would be my best bet?
Dead Link Removed I have the DynoMax cat back system on my '93 and it is probably not what you want. If you want somthing that is loud the DynoMax would not be the choice I would make. It is alot louder than the stock exhaust but only when you get on the throttle. Cruising down the road it is really quiet. The performance gains were signifigant jsut not alot of sound.

I have the flowmaster 40 delta series on mine with 2.25 in and a single 2.25 out. To me it is much louder than stock and there is a noticeable drone with light acceleration down the highway which my wife hates.I kind of like it, it reminds me of my younger days but to keep peace in the family it's got to go. I am putting on the dynomax super turbo tomorrow and I will let you know how it sounds.

Well the dynomax is on and it is just a bit louder than stock at idle with a mellow low tone. Accelerate and it has a nice mellow
tone also and there is no drone sound inside. My wife is now happy so it makes me happy, if you know what I mean. As far as performance goes I can not feel any difference between the flowmaster and the dynomax.

Will the Borla cat-back fit if you have an aftermarket hitch receiver -- I am just wondering bc it looks like not too much room left for the tail pipe?
I have installed a Borla cat-back system on my '94 and it sounds pretty decent. I just had my cat-converter changed out to a high-flow one and it sounds even louder. You might just consider switching your cat-converter to get a louder sound.

Hey J91Ford, you said you have a Gibson cat-back. Did you notice any performance gains from that system? I am looking for something that will add some power, but not much sound. I like to keep a low profile. Also, does the tailpipe come out the back or at the stock side exit? I called Gibson a while back and they didn't even know what a Navajo was, but apparently they make an Explorer system I could use. Thanks.
I read all the posts about the flowmaster mufflers and I was just wondering which series should i get? I am looking for an increase in noise but not too loud, because my parents sometimes drive my truck and I know they definately wouldn't like it, and definately an increase in power. Anyone have a 40 series delta flow? also anyone know of a place that i could get a pretty good deal on one? thank ya!
P.S. this isn't my normal post name I am on my boyfriends because I couldn't remember my password LOL Dead Link Removed. I normally post under KAF97EddieBauer
I have been extremely satisfied with my Borla (Cat-back and headers).
The sound is growly, but at highway speeds, it does drone. When you really get on it, people will definitely know it is not stock.
Installation was also a breeze - it fit the stock location, hangers, cat., and everything else like a glove. Hardest part was getting off the old hardware.

Pete,
Define 'a breeze' - did you do this yourself? Any tools neded besides wrenches, a set of ramps and a couple of beers?
I have to agree to with Pete, my total time was 40 minutes, that included a run to the hardware store for new bolts to the cat, The longest part is getting the old system off. I used a sawzall cut it in half and then cut off the supports. The Borla went on in 10 minutes and fit like a glove. Also you may want use vaseline on the rubber grommets that you slide the new system on. you'll probaly need new bolts to the cat, my stock spring bolt was extremely rusted.
