Figured that I would post some information for people replacing their stock 8" sub that are under a very limited budget. My 1999 Mountaineer factory sub had enough punishment for a tad over a decade, so I had to find an affordable replacement (money aint growin on trees at my house). I bought a Boss CX8 subwoofer for $27.99 shipped from Sonix Electronics today and within 30 minutes I had bass that stepped up a level over the factory sub. I didn't take any pictures because it was as easy as unbolt and bolt in the new one. If anyone has any questions about the install, let me know.

At the time I bought my sub, the cheapest I was able to find was the $27.99 shipped from Sonix. I had a Boss amp in my first car when I was 16 (half my life ago) and it was the biggest turd of an amp ever, but I decided to take a chance this time with one of their subs and its doing well so far. I bought the CX8 because of shallow mounting depth of the factory enclosure.

Can I power the chaos series one with my stock amp?

Nope.
Stock Amp is 6 OHMs, that sub is 4 OHMs. Much easier to run a new amp and better sub.

i have a pioneer shallow mount 8 in mine peak 500 watt but only using factory amp

Not a good idea.

Running a 4 ohm sub on a 6 ohm amp can cause major problems.
It stresses the amplifier, which causes it to heat up. That heat can lead to a fire or failure in the system.

Glad I decided to research this before swapping in a new sub. Now I have to save cash and purchase an entirely new setup?! That sucks, especially since the factory amp works just fine..anyone else find a way around this??

you could probably put a weak sub in there. Low wattage and it'll work.

Isn't a 4 ohm 'weak' sub is still a 4 ohm sub

yes, a 4 ohm 'weak' sub is a 4 ohm sub. But if it doesn't take as much wattage to power it, it can run on 6 ohms. There will still be the risk of a fire.

Honestly, try to find a 6 ohm sub, or get a direct replacement. A cheap 4 ohm sub doesn't mean it's a weak sub. It's better to get something with a brand name.

I know a few people have swapped in a JL Audio, JBL and Boss sub in the stock spot.

But, why not just run an amplifier and you won't have these problems. Get a cheap used $50 amp. Lol.

I had the boss sub. Just changed to the pioneer shallow mount. I am running the factory amp. Have been for well over a year with a 4 ohm sub. The boss sub lasted about a year. The pioneer shallow mount sounds way better.

what size?

8".. just went through everything with weather strip tape as well. I used it to eliminate rattles. Every piece that connects to another piece in that corner of the truck is rattle free now. Sounds pretty epic without significant money spent.
