I have an 02' Explorer Sport, 4.0ltr of course 5 speed.. 8400miles on it..
Lately I have noticed that it has a noticebale "tap" almost like a knock but more like a tick comeing form the bottom end. This noise only occurs at idle, and after it warms up.

Normal?
Need to take it in?

Thanks much for any info.. Stig.

Think i have the same thing on my 2001 sport. Thought maybe an exhaust leak, but not positive. Bloody thing sounds like a diesel running. Doesn't seem to affect the way it runs though. Strange.

Same here no perfomance or mileage difference to be noted, just a little too noisey for my taste... thanks for the reply.

Stig.

I have the same noise at low rps, ben lie that for 40k now, it's been to the dealer for otehr tings and once for that but they never said anything was bad

Funny. Same thing here. Last dealer I had the explorer in wanted to prove to me that there was nothing wrong. They fired another 2001 Sport on their lot and it sounded the same. Probably gonna take it to a new dealer for an opinion cause this sound just cost me a sale on my 2001 X.

Do you guys have SOHC's? I'm guessing so as I dont think that the OHV is an option anymore but I have definately been wrong before. It slunds to me like you may need the m12 recall performed.

Randy

Definitely have the SOHC. Which recall is the M12? Thanks.

M12 is the timing tensioners, which supposedly only happens when cold. If it's doing it all the time, it may be the TSB for the timing chain and sprockets.

The noise is comeing from the bottom portion of the motor on mine though.. : /

It may be the REAR timing chains on the SOHC then. A couple members here needed them fixed as well as the usual fronts. Unfortunately the engine must come out for the rears...

However, are you sure its coming from the engine? Mine makes some clicking type noises as it warms up, but they are from the exhaust expanding to the new temp.

If it's a stick and it happens in neutral without you stepping on the clutch, it may be the throwout bearing.

It is a stick.. and does happen when it warms... and is a constant tick with the engine... and only times I do hear it is when the gear is not engaged.... no performance lose to speak of though.. I have heard other Explorers make the same noise and they were autos... weird.

Without hearing it, I'd almost say throwout bearing, but it definitely is a weird thing,
