Ford claims the brakes are larger on the new 2013 Sport.

I looked side by side of a Sport and a Limited and I cannot tell them apart.

Does anyone know what the differences are in the 2013 Brakes and the other 2013 models?

they are larger, I can tell you from driving the stopping power on the sport is incredible compared to my previous XLT.

According to the specs

Standard front rotors 2.25in x 13in x 13in
Sport front rotors 3.25in x 14.5in x 14in
Standard front calipers 4.44in x 7.31in x 11.31in
Sport front calipers 5.25in x 8.0in x 12.63in

Standard rear rotors 1.8in x 13in x 13in
Sport rear rotors 3.25in x 14.5in x 14in
Standard rear calipers 3.8in x 6.5in x 6.6in
Sport rear calipers 4.0in x 6.4in x 6.7in

Significantly larger in all areas

Brake data

Great info on the brakes. What was your source?

Looked up the part numbers on fordparts.com
There are only two options for rotors and calipers, standard duty and one that doesn't say standard duty (I assume police interceptor and sport). It was also confirmed in other threads that the sport is using the brakes from the police interceptor, so this jives with the measurements I listed.

here is another thread post with part numbers for the police interceptor (I believe the same brakes that are on the sport), it confirms the measurements I posted

Big brakes don't really stop the car any quicker.

The Sport has wider and potentially softer tires than a normal Explorer (performance tires are an option for the Sport). I'd credit the tires for more of the braking performance than the larger brakes between the 2 Explorers.

Big brakes are good at absorbing more heat before brake fade becomes an issue.

^Tom is right. Unless it's horrible brakes (think worn out drums or rubber band brakes) then braking is mostly due to the tire. Although there are some other differences such as feel that make the bigger brakes better.
It's mostly for fade though

After further thought you are correct, stock brakes can lock up the tires just like big brakes... increased brake life is definitely the largest benefit. I mean 1/10th of a second maybe to get from moving to abs isn't going to affect stopping distance.

The standard brakes can lock up the tire no? So how does it make sense that stronger brakes help braking distance when the tires lock up well before the standard brakes are at their limit?

Yeah, I edited my post above shortly after hitting submit :)

Tires

I am fairly confident that when I looked at the 2013 Sport and XLT(with 20" wheels) that they had the same tire. They were both Hankook

Tires

The two tires I compared on the 2013 Sport and the 2013 XLT (with 20") were the same brand and size.

In the order guide I saw, I did not see where Ford offered a tire or wheel option on the Sport.

Where did you see a tire option for the Sport?

Late Availability on the summer only performance tires for Sport.

But the XLT has 255/50r20 tires while the Sport can be outfitted with 265/45r20 "performance" tires. So wider AND softer. They could both be from Hankook.
XLT 255/50R20 tires are optional. The standard is 245/60R18.
The Sport I saw at my dealer had the 255/50R20 Hankooks but they did not look like the Optimo H426. (I think that is what was on the Limiteds. Going from memory).

Do both the Ex and Sport use the same number of pistons in their front brakes?

Tires

The two models I looked at were both the Optima.

Was not aware of the other offering. I would like to see pics of the other tire. Seems it would be a little tall and fill the fender better.

My Hankooks are the Optimo H426s.

I wish Ford would have put Yokohama Parada Spec-X on instead of these. I am fearful that the winter performance is going to be garbage with the Kooks. I digress.. Sorry..

You just missed the Cyber Monday special where you could have had a 2 year membership for the price of 1.
Elite Membership has nothing to do with the number of posts. It indicates a member has paid their membership dues to help support the Forum.
