hey guys,

Well i yanked a rear end out of an explorer from a junk yard to use in a truck i'm building and since they charge for every piece i neglected to take the drums too knowing i would buy new ones. well i thought it was a 2002 and when i got the drums they dont fit. they hit the backing plate before touching the axle flange by about a 1/2 in. is there any way to tell the year or a way to measure that may help me find out which ones i need. the one bit of info i did keep was the d4 code for the gears.

thank you
mike

The only Explorers that had rear drums were 91~94. Anything newer is 4W disc. 2002 Ex is 4W disc and independent rear suspension, so you definitely don't have that. The chart on this page lists D4 for both a 7.5" Bronco II and 8.8" Explorer, 3.73 ratio limited slip for both:

Good luck!

Are the drums you got inside a set of rotors? I think the 2002 sports still had the solid rear axle.

Right - i forgot about those. Still, with the possible exception of the Sport Trac, I don't think there were any drum-braked Explorer derivatives in 2002.

Yeah, no drum brakes after 94, I was just wondering if he was confusing the parking brake drum inside the rotor used on the 95+. I suppose it isn't likely.

thanks guys. went with 92 drums and that was it. i knew this was the right place to ask. thanks again
