Have you "retracted" the shoes? You can reach through a small hole near the bottom of the backing plate with a couple of screwdrivers and rotate the adjustment wheel to retract the shoes.

Mine were a major pain to get off. I ended up using a rubber mallet for quite a while to loosen them. My Honda was designed so much smarter. There are two threaded holes that you screw bolts into, and the bolts push the drum off. I wish the X had the same set up!
