Brake Light Coming on in the dash

The brake light LED is on in my 2000 Explorer and I don't understand why or what to look at to troubleshoot the problem. It just came on and it stays on until I hit the brake and then the light goes off and when I am done using the brakes it comes back on. Any help would be great.

Ok, I just checked and it is a little below half. I will go by the parts store tomorrow and get some DOT 3. Thanks for the quick reply.

The low brake fluid indicates pad wear.

Check the pads. If they need replacing, bleed the pistons when you reset them.

Add new brake fluid
