Brake Lights Stay On

My wife and I have loved our '02 Mercury Mountaineer since we bought it and still do. Tonight, however, my wife went out to get something from outside and noticed the brake lights were on. I went out and tried everything I could to get them to power off to no avail. I finally had to disconnect my battery terminal. Could someone give me any suggestions?

this happens to my 03 it will shut off by reaching up to the top of the brake pedal arm and sorta twisting the brake sensor what you hear it click it shut off i bought a new one but havent put it on yet doesnt do it to much i think its done it like 5-6 times if you need a new sensor i think it was like 15 dollars not sure how to get it on though lol
