O. K., all these years of maintaining my vehicles and never once have I tried to tackle replacing the brake pads. So, now it's like I'm a freshman all over again. My 2000 Mountaineer needs pads and it's time to learn. Does anyone out there know of a good site that explains in detail how to do this? Better yet, can anyone provide a step by step list of what has to be done? I'd sure appreciate it. Hate to look bad in front of my significant other (my "Home Biscuit").

I don't think there is anywhere that has a step-by-step of the process. If you are handy with the hands, it isn't that hard to figure out once you are in there. My $.02, remember to lube the caliper pins and use Blu-Goo (anti-squel compound) between the pads and shims, and use big c-clamp to colapse piston before installing pads.

If you want to look real impressive in front of the loved one, get a Haynes manual and read about the process before getting started. Then you know exactly what is going on.

It is not hard for a handy guy to replace the pads on an X. Actually it's one of the easiest cars I've ever replaced pads on. It has been awhile, however, so I, too recommend getting the book. And like he said use the luba and anti-squeal goo.

You can do this easy.
