I drove my ex to school the other day, noticed smoke was coming out from under the hood. I opened the hood and it looked as though the smoke was coming from the brake booster, and i've been losing brake fluid lately, so I'm assuming there's a leak somewhere. I searched the power booster smoking to no avail. Has anyone heard of the booster smoking?

there was a recall on my truck (97 ex), my friends ranger got the same recall so its not specific to ex's.

were something with the cruise control and the brakes, it would cause fires. anyone got the recall number? i don't have it anymore.

i wouldn't drive it, not worth your truck catching on fire.. is the brake fluid leaking onto the exhaust?

I'm not too sure, all I did was open the hood to see where it was smoking from. It might be, though. I'll have to drive it around a bit and find out.

And yeah, I'm using the 4x4 instead since it's something with the brakes, I don't want to lose my brakes on the way to school or something.

huh your using 4x4 for what?

There is an electrical connector on the side of the brake master cylinder. IIRC, its used for the crhise control. The recall was to add a fuse on that line. IF the switch goes bad brake fluid can get in there, cause a short and since there is no fuse there from the factory it can catch fire.. the technical term for that is "BAD".

For now, disconnect the connector from the switch, get a new switch and put a fuse on that switch. Hopefully someone with the recall can post a pic of what it looks like.

One other thought.. Check with the dealer to see if you quality for that recall still? if so, get it done, ASAP, like yesterday..

Like Equnoxe said, it's my other explorer :P
The one i'm having smoke issues on is my daily 4x2, the 4x4 still has some stuff that needs to get fixed. :D

Btw, amazing truck. The motor is beautiful. I couldn't reply in the thread, but I hope I can build my exploder's motor like that one day, too. What does it top out at?

I'll just get the new connector and swap it in. I need to know what the name for the part is, though. Would autozone even have it or am I going to have to go to a dealer for it?

Bump for update on the recall info?

thanks man:D haha i didnt know if you was using 4x4 for driving or what, was about to say thats why its smoking!!!im doing gear/rear end swap right now so it will be way faster out the hole but ill lose top end witch im not worried about.its going to the dyno after gears and hopefully getting a tune sometime after.ive had it to the D before and it had plenty left,i was to scared to go any faster on 33s and 6" of lift!!!i need to look into the recall tho also.

Yeah, no problem. I just refer to my Ex that has 4x4 as THE 4x4 since i have another one that's 4x2. It helps my mom distinguish them whenever I talk about the Ex's.

Your truck really is an inspiration, though. I've got big plans for a sport truck build, so yours really shows some of the possibilities. Can't wait to see how your Ex does on the dyno

And I looked into the recall, and this is what the ford site said:
