Okay guys, here's a million $$$ question for ya...

On a 96 4x4 Explorer... just today... had a very definite scraping sound like metal on metal JUST like the sound you here to confirm your brake pads are shot and are now digging into your rotor... yeah been there done that. Only when I check everything .... rotors looked good... brake pads looked good... pull off rotor... off drops a spring(broken) and something that looks similar to fishing lead weight about 1/8 in diameter and approximately 2-3 inches long.

Now after confirming that this whole problem is emergency brake related here's the question...

if i just simply disconnect the emergency brake, remove these components, and drive it as usual, will it hurt anything?
that is assuming i will be getting back to this to fix it within the next couple of weeks.

thanks for your help

It should be OK for a couple of weeks. I don't suppose the shoes help stabilize the axles outboard. If they do then you may get some accelerated wear on your grease seals. The parking brake shoes are too expensive at the stealership but AutoZone has them reasonable.
