Anyone know if the brake rotors on 98 Explorer 2WD with antilock are the "slide on the lug post" kind or the "have to remove the bearings" kind? TIA

I have a 98 Sport 2WD. in order to get my front rotors off I had to remove the bearings. The rear rotor/drums are the slide over lugs kind.

Dang,
I was hoping to do this myself but this may take it out of my comfort zone.

Removing the bearings does not make it harder the slightest bit. They just slide on and off the spindle just like the rotor does.

Wouldn't I have to replace the rear seal? I also never know how tight to re-tighten the bearings?

Rear Seal

Yes, you'll have to replace it. $9 for the pair, I think.
I replaced my rotors two weeks ago, and now my ABS is all f@#ked up! Anyone know what could have caused this? Didn't remove the ABS sensor or anything.... Just repalced the rotors, and re-packed the bearings. New grease even!

Karl,
Did you get the correct rotors? When I inquired today they asked if I have ABS or not so it must make a difference.

Karl,

When you retracted the caliper piston into the housing, did you open the bleeder screw? Backforcing fluid through the system isn't a good idea, and can cause ABS problems. It's always a good idea to crack open that screw.

Make sure the new rotors had the ABS sensor ring on them. The sensors monitor how fast the slots in the ring on the back of the rotor are moving.

Didn't mean to hijack.....

..... The new rotors were for the ABS model, with the rings in the back. Not sure how the sensor got messed up, but apparently it did.
I removed the cover form teh ABS reservoir so that any excess would simply leak out, and not burst something....
I did not open the bleeder screw, but this same thing did not occure when I had my calipers off twice in the past two months.
No idea how this happened.....

Karl,

I had the same problem when I put on new rotors. I realized I made the ABS ring crooked as I was installing the rear seal. I had to straighten it out by eye using the old rotor as a guide. So you might want to check that out.
