anyone upgrade their brakes? I have a 96 x, 4door eb.. and the brakes are just horrible, and i was wondering if anyone has upgraded their brakes? do you know what company makes slotted and cross drilled rotors for the ex? I found slotted, but not sure if there is a big difference in upgrading the brakes? any feedback?

Hmm my brakes sure aren't horrible....far from it actually. Changed the pads lately? Does it not have stopping power or is there something else wrong?

New pads on all four make a huge difference. I recentley replaced my pads on all four and before they sucked. I bought premium pads and man what a difference. There is a guy near me who bought the slotted disks and likes them a lot. The downside is you have to get new calipers to fit them. I think the whole deal cost him about $450 for the front.

well they dont really suck i guess, yeh,, i did change the pads for all 4, but my dad also has the 2001 pathfinder, and compared to that... it sucks alot. maybe 20-30 feet difference from 60-0.
the x is also a lot less sensitive, whcih i guess has it ups and downs, but you need to press the brake pedal a lot harder to get maximum stopping power.
what pads did you get? i just got the pads the ford dealership has.

the X is also a real truck and isnt unibody...thus it is probably like 1k #s heaviers, thus the extra 20 feet stopping distance...

Ford may have changed their system after 96, my 2001's brakes are very sensitive. You might just need some new rotors, if they are glazed(really shiney) then they will be really insensitive and prone to fading. If they are original rotors you need to replace them, if they are slightly newer you may be able to get them turned.

13" Brake Conversion Info

Wanna put "Cobra R" 13" front brakes on?
Here is some brake info that might be useful.
It only applies to 98-01's
AWD's have two piece rotors, so you can buy the Mustang Cobra "R" rotors and calipers from Baer (www.baer.com) and bolt them on to the stock hubs. They also make a 13" AWD kit themselves.
2wd's (lucky me) are more work. They have one piece rotors.
This is what I am in the process of trying: I bought two used one-piece rotors and hubs from a junkyard. I sent them to a machine shop to have the rotors cut off. Now I have just the hub. I'm going to re-install the hubs (minus rotors) on the spindles, and purchase and install the 13" rotors on the hubs (like a standard 2 piece setup on a late model mustang).

No matter what your drivetrain is, a bracket has to be fabricated to mount the caliper.
I'm told, so long as you master cylinder is the 15/16 bore or larger (mine is 1-1/16) no proportiong valve work has to be done.

Salleen (used to) sell a 13 inch kit for explorers, but it only fit AWD's. List price was $1999. 13" brakes were optional on all Saleen Exp's.

Yes, the stock brakes on Explorer's suck. I'll try to take pictures as I go along, so if anybody needs to do this in the future......

BTW, you have to have 17" wheels to clear the Cobra calipers.

well that sucks for me i guess.. i have the 96... anything i can do for mine??
