Brakes make horrbile Groaning Noise

My brakes make horrible groaning noises...Whats wrong?!?!?!

The rotors bought new from ART in May 2002. Installed and they immediatly began groaning.

Just called the other day-he is sending me new rotors, will take about 2-3 weeks.

I'm worried that the ones he sends me will make the same noise.

What would cause such horrible groaning like this. Its really loud and annoying.

is this only when you put the truck in gear or are moving very slowly forward with the pedal almost all the way down? if so.. I dont know of a car that DOESN'T do this.. mine has done it for a few years. its just the discs sliding along the pad, the pad is stopping the rotor, but not completley..

now if its doing it all the time.... then you have a problem. but if its only in such situations as I described, I dont think thats anything but normal

No, its worst between 55-35. Slow stops are fine with little or no noise.

If I am going down the freeway and have to slow from 70 to 45 its the worst.

When you replaced the pads did you remember to put the little spring clip back on the inner pad? If not, there's your problem. The clip is designed to keep the inner pad from moving and if it isn't there the pad can vibrate under high speed braking.

What spring clip? The one that fits on the end of the brake pad and has a little tab looking thing that goes towards the rotor? Then yes I did.

Funny thing though-in the past I didn't put those clips in and had no problem. I know they're on there now, both sides of truck and both on the forward braking side. Did I install them on the wrong side?

Should they be on the reverse braking side?

I'm not sure what you mean by forward and reverse braking side, but the clips go on the bottom of the inner brake pad.

Maybe it's bearing noise?

Alos, did you use caliper slide rail grease? Did you put any grease on the back of the inner pad?

Okay, pins are greased but the spring things are on the top of the inner pads.

Could that be the problem of all the noise???

The bearings, I think they are humming, but the only time I get the groaning is when I hit the brakes. Even lightly, then will go away immediatly, so I am 99% positive its the brakes.

I have a 2000XLT and have the same problem -the brake pads are fine . The noise I hear gets worse as I slow down -worse at slower speeds - have been told my other users on this forum that it could possibly be due to the type of brake pad that was installed (possibly use a 'softer' brake pad) let me know if you solve the problem I need a fix also:redexp:
