Brakes/rotors

I have a 91sport 4x4. I want to change the rotors, but i was told i will have too take the hub assembly apart. Will this be difficult?

This is actually pretty simple to do. I have done it about 4 times in the past year. I have a 91 XLT 4x4. Once you get the wheel off take the hub off. There is a C-clip on the spindle that must be removed. Than a spacer of some sort that will slide out with your fingers once you get it to line up with the grooves. After that there is a plastic unit with a spring around it. Take a small flat screwdriver and GENTLY pry it out. I say gently because there are some spacers between that and nut that holds the bearing. Once this is off, you will see the nut and it will have a slot in it which contains a tiny metal "thingy" this keeps the nut from moving. Pry this out with an even smaller flat screwdriver. It may be necessary to tighten and loosen the nut a little to jar the little "thingy" loose. I use a pair of large channel-lock pliers. Next just unscrew the nut and pull the outer bearing out and your done. Dont forget to remove caliper of course.

Good Luck. About 10-15 minutes per side including taking tire off..

myexp has most of the basics for removing the rotors. That little metal "thingy" is usually easy to remove with a strong magnet, you might have to move the nut on and off a little to get the "lock" to come out.

Be real careful when you reassemble the plastic parts back on the hub, cause the cams have to line up real flush to get the wheel back on.
I highly recommend getting a manual like haynes or chiltons to help you along!

Since someone brought up the subject of brakes, I will need new pads soon for my 91
Sport and I'm thinking about the new ceramic
ones made by Raybestos. They are called "Quiet something...", I can't remember the exact name. Cn someone explain the advantages or disadvantages of ceramic pads verses regular or semi-metallic ones?

And while you're doing the rotors..now would be a good time to re-pack the bearings. And like roadkill said..buy a manual cause they always come in handy down the road. It's a very simple/easy job. It took me 45 mins/side to change the rotors/brake pads/re-pack the bearings and convert to manual hubs. It's not a difficult job. Dead Link Removed
