I've got a question. My car gets worked on when it has issues or time to change out tires, fluids, etc.

I had brand new tires put on about 6 months ago. I don't drive much anymore and haven't had it on the highway for any distance driving for about a year or so. What I'm experiencing when I apply the brakes normally is the car keeps rolling. I have to stomp down with brute force on the brake as it is not even slowing down then I get this high pitched squealing noise with a sudden stop. The sudden stop isn't strong enough to throw me forward but the brakes do eventually stop the car and fast.
I took her back to the garage (which I trust) and explained what's happening and after some waiting around I was referred to 2 other repair shops to check out the ABS system. The referral was they are full service whereas my tire guys aren't.
Can you think of any other problem that could be causing this behavior? I ask as up until I had the new tires put on I didn't experience any problem with stopping. Thanks! GreenLizzy

It could be a number of things causing your problem. The best thing to do, IMO, is to have it properly diagnosed at a reputable shop. This will keep you from spending money on unnecessary parts. Unfortunately, many shops just start replacing parts until one of them fixes the problem.

Any loss of brake fluid?
Look at the brake master cylinder where it bolts to the brake vacuum booster, any signs of fluid leaking there?

Does the vacuum booster hold
Vacuum after the engine is shut off?

How long since the brakes were fully serviced? I mean 1992 brake calipers are very old now

Thanks guys! I realized after I posted my message that it was on the wrong message board. Will browse a bit to find the correct one and copy the message where I might get more information.

I did search a bit on the WWW and have come to the conclusion that the 1992 explorer does not have abs installed. The first date I found was 1993. In the process of searching I went back and starred at my dash with the engine running and there is no abs status that shows up so I'm kinda agreeing with what I have discovered and think just maybe that my explorer requires new brakes. Will find out soon enough. mg

92 may have rabs which is rear anti
Lock brakes and it never did work very well imo
