Hi, I'm new here, and I have what may be a very simple question. I have a 98 Explorer sport, and my screen name says it all. All of my break lights seem to be done. I checked the bulbs, which were fine, and then the fuses, which were also fine, so I asked some guys I knew and they said that it was probably a break light switch. Does that sound right or am I just dumb? ANY WAY... I found where I can get said "switch" but I want to know how to install it. Any tips?
Thanks!
Elle

Try to shift the transmission out of park without stepping on the brake... then try to shift out of park while stepping on the brake... if the shifter was locked with your foot off the brake, and you were able to shift it while stepping on the brake, the switch is working fine. Try that before replacing the switch. If you do need to change the switch, it is on the lever that the brake pedal is attached to, just above where you would put your foot.

I don't know if this matters, but I have a manual...

It's near the top of the brake pedal. I think it just clips on.

You want the Boo (Both On and Off) swith. It is located just above the brake pedal. Both Rangers and Explorers are prone to going bad. You'll need small flat head screw driver to pry the lock pin off. Its pretty simple precess. Oh, make sure you replace all the washers and the lock pin in the order you remove it.

You could either get it at your local Ford stealership at $17 each or the same switch at Autozone for around $5.00. I think the proper name for it is "stop lamp switch".
