Brighter Light???

Hi all,

I have a 97 4 door 5.0 Explorer using the old headlight bulbs and I would like to upgrade to something much brighter. I'm not looking for the type that are blue or another color (they make it hard for me to see when a car, with them, is headed for me and I would not want to do that to anyone else), preferably the same color light I get from my current bulbs or something simply white.
Any suggestions?

In order from good to best, I would go with the sylvania XtraVision, Silverstars and then the Silverstar Ultras. Depending on how much money you want to spend.

The silverstar's are a great upgrade to the stock headlights. I would recommend those for sure.
The light is more of a "pure" white instead of the yellowish lights the stock bulbs produce.

Depending on what type you could try these John Deere "HIR" bulbs.

Oops, those only work for third gen. Either way, you could check it out, maybe they could be made to work someway.

Are the headlight covers still clear, or have they yellowed/gotten foggy? If so they can be cleaned with rubbing compound, zaino plastic polish, or even Brasso and it's amazing how much more light you get back.

On a ten yr old veh. you may just want to buy some new headlight housings. $60 on ebay.
Then add a heavy duty headlight harness that will increase the voltage to your lights and also brighten them.http://www.rallylights.com/other/wiring.htm $63. Then choose a headlight bulb $15 to $35. Total $150. appx.

Sounds to me like you want Sylvania XtraVisions or Philips Hi-Visibility bulbs. Under $20 for a pack of 2, and a big improvement over stock or standard halogen bulbs. The Silverstars aren't the bulbs you're looking for, they produce the blue/white light with a coating, plus they're twice as much. New housings will help if yours are yellowed or cloudy, plus the harness helps even more, but if the lenses are ok and you don't feel like doing the electrical work, the bulbs are the way to go.
