broke both rear coil springs

Add my 2002 XLS with 73,00 miles to the list of broken rear springs. All the shocks feel shot anyway. Have had it for about 9 months and still don't like like the way it feels on the road even after new tires and some front end parts. I hope spending more $$ on this will finally get it right. Is there any other replacement springs available besides Ford? I think I will get Monroe Reflex shocks with the new springs.

Ford's quality reviews are going to plummet in the near future when things such as this hit the fan.
The SuperDuty diesel exhaust fire is an example.
this is what ford e mailed back to me!

Man I'd have one hell of a nasty response for them. You should give us his direct e-mail, and let everyone with this problem flood his e-mail with complaints!

That is the way Ford treats Everybody. I took my explorer in to get my Cruise Control fixed, and my CD player mysterisly died. Suspious, I looked it over myself, and found the cord that provides power was intentionally cut. And next to it was instructions from Ford telling Ford how to fix it when I came in to get it repaired!!!!!!!!!!!

At the dealership I work for, we see lots of Escorts with broken rear coils, but so far we haven't run into any Explorers with this problem. My guess was road salt got to them, and eventually they just got weakened by it.
My local Carquest sells so many Escort springs that they actually stock at least one pair at all times! We usually get at least one Escort a year with broken rear coils.

AHHHHHHHH evil ford guy^^^^^^ get him! :p: LOL.

Nah, not evil Ford guy. I manage a relatively small used car dealership. We deal in older higher-mileage cars, and also do service work, so the vehicles we see tend to be a bit worse than average condition. You get to see particular patterns in what things fail in various vehicles, so it helps you know what to look for when you're at the auctions buying. Like GM 3.1/3.4 intake gaskets, Cadillac Northstar head gaskets, Chrysler 2.7 sludge problems, etc.

Hmmm good to know. Any other "common" problems you'd like to share?

I have a 02 4-door XLT that has broken both rear coils about 1-2 full wraps from the top also!

It has also had the LF and RR wheel bearings go bad.

And the rear axle seal replaced twice.

I'm the orig owner, vehicle has 60k miles and never driven off road.

Talk about a piece of crap.

.

Wow! Sounds like mine....a real piece of crap! Same year, same problems.

nice find man, let us know how they work out. If my '03 goes bad for some reason I'm sure as hell not paying the dealer to replace.

I will. You might want to jack it up and check. You couldn't even tell until i had it lifted up. It's at the very top of the coil

Both our rears on an oct '01 build 2002 XLT are broke. Update once the dealer checks it out.

Hey everyone...been lurking around for sometime now, but i took my 02 EB Explorer in for rear springs. I don't anything unusual...just drive to work and home. Took it to my guy for repair and spent $1400. In addition to the rear springs i also had to replace the left wheel assembly as it the lower hub was heat welded to the assembly. Costly little trip...

Dealer said we're SOL. This is the first time they've heard of it. Just gonna get the new springs from FPN and get a new set of struts, but them mated together and stick them in.

Wow, thats just really really poor quality, is it a possibility that coils from other vehicles or years will fit, or are there any aftermarket?

There's lowering springs out there. Not what my parents want.

FPN lists a rough road spring and a handling spring. Not sure what the difference between the two.

If you can find the specs on those springs, you can probably hit up an Eibach catalog or something and find a spring with the same spring rate and physical dimensions.
