Hey guys!

Just drove off the lot not even an hour ago and we broke down near Mount Shasta, FML. Gears will not engage and there’s red fluid on the back of the car, also was smoking on the right side of the engine when pulled over. Tranny failed maybe? Anyways getting it checked out near by and the tow truck is on it’s way. Great looking truck and remaining optimistic lol let’s see what happens next.

Sounds like a catastrophic loss of transmission fluid. It could be one of the lines going to, or from, the radiator failed.

Transmission cooler line
Or
Front pump seal

Sorry to hear this! The a4ld automatic is known for losing a front pump seal especially after a rebuild

That is what the mechanic said it was. He said nothing smelled burnt so the trans is probably still good and he was able to drive it around after he put in new fluid. I guess these things leak when they get overheated so he said he’s going to take everything out and reseal it plus change out the lines. Said it’s going to run around $1k 🤦🏻‍♂️

With the new front pump seal it is a good idea that it is “staked” into place which means he will make a few chisel marks around the edge of the new seal to help it stay put. Also a good sealant can be used to help glue the new seal in place.
I would mentions this to your trans guy

Awesome, thanks man! I will let him know!

Welcome to this forum! There's a passage way called a weep hole for fluid drain back. In the A4LD rebuild diary thread, Glacier991 recommended drilling out that passage way to enlarge the channel. He also recommended replacing the bushing. At one time that required special machining in place to make it concentric. A newer design bushing is available which doesn't require machining in place. Have the mechanic check the fluid level in the radiator, the thermostat, and if the radiator is clogged. Excessive heat will cause the seal to blow out.

Beautiful first gen bro

Front trans seal same thing happened on my 94. Fix it yourself. It's a lot of work but it's not hard. Save yourself $1000. You have an Explorer now... you're going to want to learn to fix it, or you'll learn to throw money at it.

Welcome. Nice looking Sport.
