I bought a 1995 Explorer and when I went to get the oil changed, the outfit would not do it, as they said the oil filter housing unit was loose/broken and they didn't want the liability of having it break off down the road and be on the hook for repair of serious damages. The dealer says that item is not made anymore and I'd have to search a junkyard to get a replacement part. Hence I have not chjanged the oil in over a year (my son drives it to and from work--5 miles 1 way and has been working for 6 months). I just keep adding oil whenever it is low.

Anyone else had or now have this problem? Is it a common thing? Any suggestions? I also need a new driver side seat belt female clip, as the buckle won't stay in the connector (I have to use the passenger connector). How hard is it to replace? I'd prefer not to pay the dealer's price for the item as it's probably over $100.

I'm assuming your talking about an 4.0 OHV motor..

If the filter housing is loose, tighten the bolt in the center of it. If its still leaks you will need to change the o-ring.. I doubt its broken.. But.. if it really is, I "should" have on on the old motor sitting in the shed..

Ditto, that should be the same part for any pre-2001 4.0 Explorer engine. Later 4.0's have an adapter which takes a different filter. Yours takes the FL1A filter.

Change the oil, change the air filter, dirty oil kills an engine. Welcome to the site.

welcome

Just so you know what your looking for...

Its the yellow bolt you see on the side of the motor in this pic..

Thanks, I'll try it. I just have to take it up to my brother in law's house. He has a hydraulic lift in his 40 ft by 30 ft detached garage. Be a while, though, until he heals from his hernia operation.

Thanks to you, as well

There is a lot of room around the filter with the truck on level ground. Try to climb under there and see how much space you have to get a socket in there.

I gotta headache....
