broken transmission - replacing

I have a 92 Eddie Bauer, and recently, my tranny quit on me. I could take it to a shop and have them redo it, but wheres the fun in that? I have been looking for used trannys in my area, and a few are from 94 Explorers, and some are from 92 Rangers. My question is, are these interchangable? Can I just take a trans from a ranger and bolt it onto an explorer? I know they are basically the same vehicle, I just dont want to eff anything up. Any suggestions?

I think what you are looking for is the A4ld automatic, be sure to replace the torque converter with a new one.

If i just pull a transmission out of a junker, do I still need to replace the torque converter?

I would, they are not to high in price, and if yours goes out, then you have to pull the tranny back out to replace. Most would recommend it, but it's up to you.

The only thing with na junk transmission, knowing how "ford tough" these transmissions are, its not if the transmission will die, but when. I want to get mine rebuilt, but I dont have $3400 to spend right now, seeing as how I'm in high school and have no job. If I put a junk transmission in there, how hard is it to rebuild the original myself? If I do rebuild mine(over time of course) will it be more reliable than the stock trans? Also, if it is a couple of months until I get around to rebuilding it, what is the proper way to store a transmission? I dont want to put in a car a transmission that is full of cobwebs.

You could rebuild your self, as far as storage, I would put it in plastic, but read my post in your towing thread.

Thanks for all your help Exploder. I have one more question: I found a tranny jack for $70 from Harbor Freight Tools. Its capacity is 450lbs. Is this enough for an A4LD Automatic tranny? Transmissions aren't that heavy, I can pick one up once it is out - minus the TC. I got the same tranny jack for $50, they have a sale on that one every other month. It is a lot easier to drop the transmission. You can do it with a floor jack and a friend. Just build a wood box support. You really need to cut a 5 1/2 inch hole in that particular transmission jack to acomodate the sump in the pan and then weld a brace on the back edge. That is a little hard to do without a plasma cutter. Hope you will join us who have rebuilt them. You should read the 50+ posts on this thread located at:
