Broken wheel studs

I broke two rear wheel studs on my 91 x yesterday trying to get the wheel off. I went to replace them today but im not sure how the drum brake comes off.

Soak around the flange on the drum where it sets on the axle with PB Blaster. Use 3 lb hammer around the outer edge of drum, just hard enought to knouck the rust lose. Spray again and increase how hard you hit. You may have to do several times. A good soaking a few hours before will help get things started.

Also, there is a rubber plug on the back side of the brake. Pull that out and stick a long flat tip screwdriver through. You should feel a little gear with teeth that you want to turn to loosen the rear brakes. That is the slack adjuster. Turning it up from the back side will make your brakes looser. When you put your drum back on, you will want to work your brakes several times to re-adjust your rear brakes.

Then like the last poster said, tap around the outside edge of the drum to get it off, penetrating oil around the hub. 3 lb hammer works great for knocking the old studs out the back of the hub.

I don't use lube, but I do use a hammer to bang around the outer edge and it usually come right off.

It took me about an hour of prying and hammering and it finally came off. thanks to everyone for their input.

Wow, are you sure the parking brake wasn't engaged?
If it ever takes more than like 5 good smacks with my 3# I pop the inspection plug on the backing plate so I can loosen the star wheel. It should never take longer than like 5 minutes on any hub.

my parking brake has never worked since i got it. maybe i turned the star the wrong way? i have also heard of a lip being created inside the drum from wear but that wasnt the case either

You use two tools to turn the star. one to hold the lock up and one to turn the star.
