I have the 98 Sport X with the top of the line interior. Has the upgraded stereo- I think the midline one that has the light fading problem. It has a CD player and Tape. I believe there are 4 5x7 speakers in the vehicle.

I am looking to get better sound for the cheapest way possible as i do not have a large amount of cash. The stock radio seems to be pretty decent, I would say with a disc it sounds pretty good and has decent power when you crank it up to about 3/4 way.

This made me think that adding a decent set of aftermarket 6x8's all around would improve the system for short money. I believe the speakers are the week link, and could probably replace each set with a pair on ebay for around $50.

Any suggestion on speakers that would give most bang for the buck. I like the Kenwood Excelon series- other suggest the Infinity Kappa?

Looking for something that will play loud and clean with rock and pop music.

Also consider adding a subwoofer...

...you may not afford a Stealthbox, but a single 10 or 12 will be half that.

I have the Infinity Reference which I drove off the stock head unit until I added an amp recently. They sound great with the stock unit (if it's high power), slight loss of bottom end which for me is more than made up for by much enhanced mid-range and highs - I just bumped the bass up one notch at the head unit and it sounded fine.
I think the Kappa's require more juice to sound good than a stock head unit puts out.
Think you're right to focus on the speakers first. Others will tell you to replace the head unit first. I've been happy with my results.
