Build the 4.0 w/ C-4 or do a V-6/V8 swap??

Thoughts on motor options

  • keep the 4.0 and do a C-4

The 3.8 I am talking about is the 3.8 out of the mustang. any tranny will bolt to it. I may wind up doing the c4 swap and a 4.0 build. cam, JBA headers, 91-94 heads, ported manifold, maybe the Nissan supercharger( good thing I work at a Nissan dealer) IT might be a lighter alternative to the V8.

just a question for u guys that may do these swaps? is that 3.8 sc from a mustang the same as a 3.8sc in a thunder bird eee ?
just happened to see one in the local j yard i was in today
while ill probably be lucky to do a simple rebuild of my 4.0 when mine blows up . would a 3.8 be worth scooping up for a repower some day
 






of course the v8 is the way to go in most cases, but I seem to find myself in your same shoes. After the SAS my funds won't allow me to do a whole V8 and tranny swap, but I would love it. The 4.0 fits my needs, but the lack of adaptable tranny's is very limited. The C4 would be a great swap, Relativly simple and cheap, but no overdrive would be a bummer on the highway. But by all means I say do the C4, because I wan't a good write up on it with lots of pictures and a full summary of how you feel about it when it's done. Less suprises for me:D
 






What about a built 4.0 and swap in a 700R4 Chevy v-6 tranny off one of the 60deg v-6 cars and a 6 spline Dana 20 out of a jeep/early bronco (built of course) advance adapters makes all of the adapters you'd need, just I think you'd need to put in a ECU from stick shift truck to make the computer happy

edit: and you won't lose your overdrive
 






The factory 302 systems are so common now that it doesn't make sense do do other odd ball swaps. Either live with stock, or spend the $1000 to make a it a 302 Explorer and 4R70W.

A 4.0 DOHC engine would be nice, but the trans is poor, a 700 trans would do well. I wish someone would do one of those 2.9 DOHC head swaps over here. I'd like to hear about how that runs. Regards,

700 swap worked really well in my ranger, but I had to do a lot of bending to make the shifters for the T-case work, another benifit to the Dana 20 is you can twin stick the t-case.
 






but how hard would it be to put in a thuunderbird super coupe 3.8? yeah the 5.0 would be easier, but i happen to have 1990 t-bird sc that would be pretty neet to have that power in my truck. bolt it to a m5r2 and a fullsize transfer case. but how hard would that be? (probably way to hard?)
 






Well after talking with a friend He seen a guy at the DTC with an Ex running dana 60s, 40" rubber 5.13s with stock motor, tranny and TC. I am going to keep the current set up but rework everything.
