Well i just got a 94 explorer 4 door 4x4..i got it from a friend with a blown trans...I have a few questions...

Is there a manual trans i can put behind the 4.0? Woulds there be wiring that would need to be swapped? I don't mind cutting through the floor or whatever if need be...

Right now i just want to get it running for a daily driver (Im kinda sick of the 7MPG i get in my 79 Bronco)...

Soon to come will be a full width Dana 44 up front and full width 9 inch in the rear...just because i have them laying around...not sure about what they will be upgraded to in the future but i do want to run 44s sooner or later...how much work is it to swap in a NP205? Ive got one of them laying around as well...

for now i think I'm just going to remove all the doors just because i want to...in the future i will remove the whole body...and put a tube cage on it...

It is going to turn into my rock crawling rig...

at some point in time it will probably see a 351W in it...for now i think im just gonna stick with low gearing...

best type of suspension for crawling?

Its basically just going to be a slow move into a full tube buggy...but it will evolve from this explorer...
I'm looking for advice...any ideas...

For the manual trans, yes there is one and its called the M5OD. You dont need to cut a hole because if you pull the carpet back theres a plate bolted down. I'd find a donor ranger/explorer with the 5spd and take that plate, the trans & shifter linkage, the clutch & brake pedals, master clutch cylinder, and.. I think thats about it. Obviously you'd need the flywheel/clutch too, unless you buy a new clutch, still take the flywheel. You'll also need the starter.

Im sure someone will fill in the parts I missed, its been awhile since I've done my swap now.

As for using the np205, I'd build up a 302 and find a trans of your choice (i'll be using an Np435+np205+n203 combo when I do my 302 swap) and just go full size everything. Or, if you want to keep the 4.0 and the M5OD if you get it, Im sure you can goto Advanced Adapters and they'll sell you an adapter to adapt the back of the M5OD to the np205.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the info...Im not looking to keep the 4.0 for long...just till i can afford to rebuild a 351...this is gonna be my low budget crawler...i figure if i just gear it really low the 4.0 will do fine for now...maybe ill just find a cheap A4LD and put that in just to have it running right now...and worry about a manuall tranny when the 351 comes along...
