Bumps and pops in steering while turning ???? need help !!!1

This past weekend I went off-roading on one of the ruffest and most physically challenging trails and during this week I have noticed, several times a day, bumps and pops in what seems to be part of my steering. I am not a pro mechanic and I haven't delt with a problem with the steering yet in my 96 X XLT 4X4. Today I had to pull over because it got serious and it seemed I was loosing control of steering. On the side of the road I looked at as much of the steering components as I could without my tools and everything seemed to be in tact and tight. But I was wondering if anyone else has had these problems and if they could let me know what to do about them. If anyone can specify what part either under the hood or in the cab that would be great and if they had any ideas on what it could be thanks.

You may have just gotten air in the lines. Have heard of it happening before. At a stop, just keep turning wheel back and forth and see if it clears up.

Hey man,

Do you have any lift on your explorer?

Kendal

nope , planing to put a superlift 4" in a month

might want to look at the pivot point on the sterring rod. My is totally out with the bearings and all, and needs to be replaced ASAP. This is located about mid way down the sterring rod under the hood. If that bearing is gone, it will cause it to pop, and espically pop with the explorer is in any type of flex. hope that helps.
