You will continue to get 50/50 answers. The fact is that some trucks will rub with that tire, and some will not. The only way to know for sure is to try it.

some stock vehicles rub with stock tires.....

so what rhyno said is completely correct.... there is no way to say what works for you unless you try it

eh.. im not gonna spend the money if no one can assure me they will fit w/out rubbing. they would look GREAT though.. ill prbly just go with 30x9.50s since they are like .34 inch larger than stock

again, those may also rub, the chance is less, but even on some explorers, stock size tires rub

do you not understand what we are saying EVERY VEHICLE IS DIFFERENT!!! i had 31s on my 94 XLT with no rub and no lift..... but i have driven some otehr stock explorers that have rubbed with stock tires!

i just wish someone with no lift and 31s could give me an answer..
I have a '92 with no lift, stock 15x7 alloy wheels (not sure what the backspacing is, been meaning to check it), 31x10.50R15 Chapparal A/P tires. The tires would rub on the swaybar, but only with the wheels turned fully one way or the other. Since I took the swaybar off, it never rubs. As the tires have worn, the rubbing has gotten less. Tread seems to make up ~1/4-1/2 inch of the tires diameter, and I haven't figure out exactly where overall diameter is measured (outside of tread, base of tread, average tread?).
As has been indicated, the reason you get 50/50 answers is because 31x10.50's are at that critical size where all kinds of factors figure in to deciding whether or not it will not rub, minorly rub, or rub unacceptably: Rim size, condition of springs, swaybar, tire manufacturer (as all tire manufacturers get a little bit different size for a 31x10.50), tread depth, tire pressure, etc.
Let me ask you this, is there any acceptable level of rubbing or any acceptable level of risk of rubbing for you? If you will not tolerate any rubbing or any chance they might rub, you're probably better off with the 30x9.50's like you said.

You could also get 1 31" tire from a tire shop have them mount it on a rim, & you can test fit it on each wheel. I'm sure the shop will let you return it for credit on a different size if it rubs. I going 31X10.5X15 in a few weeks, but I have new 15X8 rims with 3.75" backspacing. No lift. I too have heard 50/50 on this fitting. I did what I just told you & I will not rub.

if a tire seller really wants your business they will do what ever you want to get it which usally means they will test fit a tire on your truck. that being said i have a 93 4dr xlt completely stock with 31" mud terrain on 15x7 rockcrawlers with i think 4.5" of backspacing with absolutly no rubbing.

I used to have a 91 with no lift and 31s, so I can give you a

definite

maybe.

:p

Mr. Sawzall is fabulous for those times when you have tire/whatever impaction.... cut the offending piece off, that's what I say! :p
