I have been on the search for a 4x4 first gen explorer for a while. I found a 91 sport with a 5 speed for cheap that needs a lot of interior help. The paint is red and I looked at the thread about the different color codes but I do not know if it is vermillion or something else. My main concern is the paint is faded pretty badly but not like a clear coat. Could any one confirm if that year came with a single stage non clear coat paint? I was told by someone that they didn't think that was factory and it is probably aftermarket garbage paint job and was hoping that is not the case. Thanks in advance for anyone's time.

As far as I know they were all clear coated. I have a paint list at home (I think) and if I can find it tonight I'll try to post up what it might have been.

Keep in mind, by now, after 26 years most of that clear is probably gone...thus the faded look. But I'd bet it probably was a clear coat metallic paint job at one time.

Thank you for the reply it was actually sold so the search will continue!

Try to get a 93 or 94 if you have a choice - they made a little more power and had durability upgrades in the auto transmission. Consider rear end gears as well, which are easily identified by the drivers door sticker codes.

Rear gears can be 3.07 (+/-), 3.27, or 3.73 (winning, but less mileage on the highway). Codes will also tell you whether you get limited slip or not. 3.73 with limited slip is tough to beat.
