Hey everyone, im new to this site, hoping i can get some help :)

I found an explorer nearby that i like. 94 6.0l 4x4 xlt 88000 miles for 4950. It has 2 potential problems and i dont know how serious they are or if i should buy it.

1. the abs light comes on SOMETIMES....wasnt on when i test drove it. resevoir is full.

2. the 4x4 didnt engage when i pressed the button. and the button light didnt turn on. i could hear clicking from the rear of the vehicle like it was trying to engage but nothing happened.

i really need 4x4 because i will use this a lot in the snow. anyone have any suggestions of what could be wrong and what it might take to fix these problems? or should i just keep looking??? Thanks :)

Joanna

first of all is has a 4l not a 6l in it... also to me 4950 is a lot for the explroer that 4x4 doesnt engage unless everything else on it is mint...

sometimes it the shift motor on he transfercase... soem people can make it work by jsut beationg it with a hammer( doubt the current owner would let you do this)

have you tryed haggling the price??

PEACE

Tell the owner the 4x4 is broken and you want $1000 off because it will be expensive to fix it. It really costs about $200 for a new shift motor, which is 99% sounds like that is your problem.

oh hes asking 4950 but im not willing to pay that. although it is in PERFECT condition in and out. all maintenance papers and original owner. I will offer 4000-4500 on it. but if the 4x4 doesnt start working i wont get it at all.

If 200 bucks would be sure to fix it id buy it. but im worried that it might be more. how can i be sure thats the problem?

Because we see it alot here on the site. If you push the button and hear clicking in the back, it is 99% of the time the shift motor for the transfer case. It can sometimes be cleaned, but many replace it.

Smell the tranny fluid. if it doesn't look good, or smells bad, don't buy it. Unless you want to rebuild the auto.

When I first put my X into 4x4, the electronic transfer case is a little sticky. Takes a few moments of push the button, reverse the truck, push the button, put the truck in neutral, repeat until crazy, and once you give up, then it engages.

Once I get it to engage, it is fine for weeks. Its just occasionally cranky.

I wouldn't worry too much about the RABS. The <brainiac> that sold me my X somehow disabled the RABS, and I've had no problem with braking.

One word of caution to the original Explorers is to have a look at the rocker panels just before the rear wheels. Spray from the rear tires can easily enter the rocker panels here and rust them from the inside out.

Thanks a lot guys. I decided i didnt want to take the chance with those problems. I went out today and bought a 99 xls 4x4. 49000 miles for 10,900. guess im gonna be on this board for a while :)

that is a great deal, my friend. enjoy!

Wow, the board actually helped somebody get a newer vehicle..LOL thats great!
