I have a 93 Explorer 5 speed that has this buzzing sound more often than not when I depress the clutch all the way. I isolated the sound to a black box under the dash and near the steering column. I am guessing the box is associated with the alarm/security system that was installed when I purchased the car new. What is causing this buzzing sound and more importantly how do I disable it? Thanks

You say it only happens when you press the clutch pedal all the way? It could be something shorting/grouding out. I would look for some exposed wire(s)

additional info on buzzing sound

Upon further investigation, I open up the black box, the the buzzing sound is being made by what seems to be the opening and closing of a contact switch which is associated with a copper wire coil. I did not want to go too much further fearing that I might break something. I also learned that disconnecting any of the three harness connects (label Accessory Door locks and starter) prevents me from starting the Explorer. My thought is to remove the black box but I do not know how. Any suggestions would be well received.

Sounds like some kind of crappy alarm system. I know of no box that looks like that stock, nor, have I ever seen a ford box that was labeled. Is there any other info on it anywhere? If it's obviously hacked into the stock harness, then you can just carefully reverse the process. It should be easy to tell what is ford and what isn't. There is probably a relay in the start wire from the ignition switch that acts as an anti theft mechanism, that is not activated when you have the box disconnected.

Hopefully it's not as bad as what was in my truck, I still don't know how it didn't burn.

I ended up splicing the main ignition harness back together, it was a mess.
