I have done quite a few of these and never paid any attention to the notches in question. I just took a look in some info I have about rebuilding these and there is no mention of the notches there either. I think you are fine with just putting it back together regardless of the position of the notches.

According to some trouble we have with this TC's, i want to eliminate all circumstances that may be cause a wrong/bad oil supply. In one cases i had small silver flakes in the oil witch came from the inside of the oilpump or maybe
from that oval worn out rear output bearing seat.
Fixing this bearing seat trouble is much expensive (sleeve insert) but a new rear case is high priced too.
Maybe the oil supply could be optimized, read about "setting additional oil bore" in the main shaft, but can't find the thread anymore.:(
Anyway, in my eyes this Tc will never be a long lasting component, but if we want to stay the Expl. on the road as a daily driver, we have to put out the $$$'s. :D
