Ok, I know my 01 doesn't have a cabin air filter and I poured thru every catalog I have from my time at the parts store and I can't locate a cabin air filter for an Explorer for any year. Also if anyone has a Mounty with a cabin air filter this is a dealer installed option not factory. Here is the note from Wix : "Ford, Lincoln Trucks + SUVs (97-04) - Not factory equipped w/ a cabin air filter - kit must be installed at dealer before this filter can be used" The wix part number is 24876.

what does that have to do w/a cabin air filter(what this thread is about)?

anywho, auto 4x4 is when one tire starts to slip/spin 4wd kicks in automatically.
